The laboratory was established in 2006 by Dr. Dave Lauder to service the local, national and international minerals processing industry and as an adjunct to his consulting services.

Dave began work in the mining industry as a laboratory assistant at Peak Downs Coal Mine in the 1970's. He went on to complete his undergraduate education at the University of Queensland and completed post graduate work at the Julius Kruttschnitt Minerals Research Centre in Brisbane. On graduation he worked at Mount Isa Mines – Mt Isa. He then went overseas to work in supervisory and management positions at Ok Tedi Mining Limited and Minera Alumbrera Limited

In late 2000 Dave returned to Australia and established himself as metallurgical contractor and consultant, working in Australia and overseas.

His notable contributions to minerals separation processes include:

The introduction of soda ash into the flotation of lead and zinc minerals in the calcium-rich recycle water of Mount Isa.

Establishment of a fluorine reverse process to reduce the fluorine content of Ok Tedi copper concentrates.

The discovery of a means of reducing zinc activation in a copper/lead/ore to enable the production of separate copper, lead and zinc concentrates.
